Starting out as the New York Americans in the American Basketball Association (ABA) before changing their name to the New York Nets, the team found early success with the addition of Julius βDr J.β Erving, leading to two championships in the late 1970s. more...
Following the ABA-NBA merger, the Nets found a home in New Jersey and spent the next few years struggling to make their mark in the league. It wasnβt until the 1990s with the emergence of players like DraΕΎen PetroviΔ, Derrick Coleman and Kenny Anderson where the Nets started to grow in popularity.
The Netsβ most successful period came in the early 2000s, where a team led by Jason Kidd, Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson made back-to-back NBA Finals. In 2004 they added high-flyer Vince Carter to the roster but never reached the Finals again.
In 2012 the Nets relocated to Brooklyn and a new era began with fan-favourite Brook Lopez, marquee signings Deron Williams and Joe Johnson forming a βsuper teamβ with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett which would also fail to deliver a championship.
After the super team experiment left the Nets starved of draft picks, the new front office went into a rebuild and the Nets became a true blue-collar underdog story. Players like DβAngelo Russell, Spencer Dinwiddie and Joe Harris β who were cast offs from other teams β found a home in Brooklyn and eventually played their way back in to the playoffs, drafting excellent young players like Caris LeVert and Jarrett Allen along the way.
With the additions of superstar players Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, the pendulum swings back in the Netsβ favour as one of the leagueβs most talented teams. ...less
